Mark 9:33-35

And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest. And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

One day, after leaving Galilee, Jesus and all of the disciples were walking down the road. Jesus heard them talking amongst themselves and sensed a little agitation among them. Obviously, He knew exactly what was going on, but he later asked them, “Hey guys, come on, what’s up?” The disciples probably knew something was up, because their “silent treatment” didn’t seem to work and because Jesus gathered them all around. It is interesting that He didn’t even address what they said; He simply started explaining the truth of the matter.

They were talking about who among them was the greatest and who would have the most success. Jesus explains, “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.” Brother Branham affirmed many times, “The way up is down”. A spirit of pride and vanity is what Jesus was addressing; kingdom builders for their own kingdoms, not the Kingdom of God.  Personal kingdom building should have no place among the Believers of Christ.

Jesus, being equal with God, thought it not robbery to become like one of us to fulfill God’s purpose (Philippians 2:6). This is the example of humility that we should strive to have. Not to build our own ministries, our own good works, or our own kingdoms, but to achieve Christ’s purpose. It can be so easy to desire to be seen and heard. We all want a certain amount of attention and admiration. But as the disciples matured and became the men of faith we know them to be, their main focus was not their kingdoms, but Christ alone.

Don’t build your own Kingdom, but do all things from a humble heart so that Christ may be exalted. Search deep down within your heart and examine your true motives. Let Christ be glorified. The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.

And when we lust for knowledge, want a Ph.D., LL.D., it's sin to do so. That's strong statements, but that's the Truth… The thing of it is, is, today we don't try to establish the Word of God in the people's hearts. We are trying to establish ourselves. Churches are trying to establish the doctrine of the church, in a person's heart. We are commanded to establish the Word of God. Paul said, "I didn't come to you with enticing words of man that your faith might rest up in the knowledge of man; but I come to you in power; in manifestations of the Holy Ghost, that your faith might rest in God."
