Joshua 10:12-13

Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies.

In the book of Joshua we find the familiar story of when the sun and moon were commanded to stand still. Interestingly enough, Joshua’s enemies worshiped the sun and moon. So for the Amorites, the sun and moon standing still clearly vindicated that Jehovah really was the Almighty of the heaven's and earth. The Amorites and all their gods were powerless to stop the heavens from standing still. Sometimes, all God wants to do is to get things to be still for a while to show His glory.

We can be moving so fast in our own ways and ideas that we get into the way of the Lord’s ability to effectively use us. Being spiritually “still” doesn’t mean that you are physically inactive. It means that you are in a place where God can move you where He wants you to be moved while you are doing what He wants you to do. It means just being neutral in a place where God can work while you are living life.

The prophet said that one of the most important aspects for spiritual revival is to be still. Joshua needed things to stop working so fast so that he could finish his battle, so he turned to the sun and moon and commanded that they stand still and stop moving so God could finish what He started.

Are things going too fast for you? Are you doing things so fast that the Lord can’t come in and work? Just be still and let the Lord move.

57-0518 - “Stand Still”

Now, the children were fighting, and the sun was going down. And the great warrior Joshua, when the sun was going down, he needed some more time. And God was in the battle, Moses' hands was up, as it were. And as Joshua was fighting, God made the sun stand still, till at once the power of Almighty God working with His children. I believe the coming of Jesus Christ is past due. But if the children would only claim their promise and not be separated and divided, I believe God would make every nation on earth stand still and see the glory of an old fashioned Pentecostal revival sweeps the world. If the children would stand still… But they won't.  That's the reason God can't get them still. When God wants to do anything, He wants you to keep still. Stand still; believe His promise. Stay right with it. Don't be carried about by everything; stand still and watch Him. Oh, what a wonderful thing. Joshua, standing, calling to God, and the sun stood still while he went out to win the battle. And he did it. The sun, nature, had to hold its peace and watch God perform His work. Certainly it does.
