James 4:4

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

I will be the first to confess; I have literally looked at my neighbor's grass and thought that it was greener than mine, and wished I had his lawn. It happens.

Sometimes, we have a tendency to look at other people’s things and think, “My, I’d like to have that.”  It might be lust, it might be old fashioned coveting, or it could be jealousy, but it happens. The real dangerous thing occurs when the fine line between wanting something and obeying God’s warnings become blurred by lust and our own desire.

This very thing happened to Israel when they were in the wilderness and began to mix with Moab. Moab was the descendant from Lot’s daughters, and had a paganistic approach to the same religion that Israel had. The line between their lust and selfish desire, and what God ordained for worship, was blurred to the point that there was no line anymore. They did what they wanted and called themselves religious. Israel saw this and wanted to mix and mingle with what they were doing. It didn’t work out so well.

James warns us that friendship and acquaintance, or literal flirting with the world is being God’s enemy. The world and its pleasures are God’s enemies because satan took what God made and perverted it until satan could have complete control over them. God wants His children completely sold out to Him and not intermingled with satan at all.

Don’t flirt with the world. Don’t dwell on the borderline. Keep your vessel as far away from worldly things as possible. Be the light that you need to be to the world, but don’t partake of her pleasures. Sell out to Christ.

Look. Now we could bring them up through what a beautiful type of Israel. When they came out of Egypt, they were on they're way up into the promised land. They were journeying out there in tents. They come up to the country of Moab. Moab, where did it spring from? From Lot's daughter's child by her father. Now, the Moabites is not unbelievers. They were worshippers of Jehovah God. Certainly they was. They even had a fine preacher over there by the name of Balaam, a prophet. But like a whole lot of hireling prophets, was money crazy (Amen.), selling their gifts. They're doing it today: fine gifted things out in the world to make money. It's a disgrace. Compromising, borderline, one day in the world, the next day in the church, you can't do that. You got to sell out, be borned again. Move plumb inland as far as you can go; stay off the borderline.
