Genesis 4:3-7

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

The key difference between Cain and his half-brothers, Seth and Abel, was that Cain left the Presence of the Lord; but Seth and Abel remained in the Presence of God. As soon as Cain left the Presence of the Lord, as it says he did in Genesis 4:16, he began civilization as we know it. It wasn’t the fact that he worked hard to build certain things, and better places to live; but the fact that, being out of the Presence of the Lord, his motives began to change.

At one point in his life, Cain was confronted by God about his motives, when God said, “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door”. Needless to say, Cain - because of his very nature and make up, being from the wicked one, the Serpent - chose the wrong way. He then left the Presence of the Lord, and that is where he made his mistake.

It was Abel and Seth that stayed in the Presence of the Lord, and because of that, God could move in and reveal things to them that they never could have received on their own. It was by revelation that Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice. The Lord respected the fact that Abel acted on the basis of what was revealed to him from the Presence of the Lord, and not on the basis of his feelings, attitude, or own reasoning alone.

Stay in the Presence of God. Always be aware, the God of heaven is watching, and is mindful of the things we do, say, and feel. Act on the revelation that He has given you, and that you have been assured of. Put that always before you throughout the day.

Stay in the Presence of God today.

144 Let’s take Genesis now, 4.
And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord,…
145 Now watch the first thing he done. (You tell me when you think we got enough here, ’cause I’ll just stop on this anywhere.) See, “Cain went out from the Presence of the Lord.” There he made his mistake. And there is where you will make a mistake, and there is where I’ll make the mistake, the very minute we walk out of the Presence of God.
