James 4:8

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

There are sometimes when we feel like the only thing we want to do is just draw closer to God. However, that is when the enemy hops onto our shoulders and begins to throw doubts about exactly how could we draw closer to God. We might hear anything from, “After what you did you think you could really get closer to God?”, or perhaps, “What could the Lord possibly use you for if you ever did draw closer to Him?” The fact of the matter remains that despite whatever the enemy may say, the Scripture says if we draw close to God, He will in turn draw close to us.

You must believe that God is real and that He rewards those who seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). When that deep burden cries out from deep within you or that thirst for more of Him comes from without, know that the Lord will draw nigh unto you. He wants to draw closer to you more than you want to draw closer to Him.

The apostle Paul gives us the key to drawing close to God in Hebrews. He explains it is through the blood of Jesus Christ that we can and must draw nigh to Him. Hebrews 10:19-22, “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”

Because the Blood of Jesus has been shed we can draw closer to the Lord in boldness, coming to His throne of grace and mercy (Hebrews 4:16-17). Once we realize we couldn’t possibly come boldly before the Lord based on our own merits or actions, we are right in the place that God can draw close to us, so we just take one step toward Him and He takes one step toward us. Keep making the right steps.

Through the blood our consciences are clean before the Lord. Through His blood we have full assurance of our faith from a pure heart toward the Lord. So when you have that feeling of wanting to draw closer to the Lord so bad you just can’t stand it, then step toward Him with boldness, knowing the shed blood was there to give you access to His throne. Try not to listen to the enemy on your shoulder.

It was in the verse before this one that James tells us to resist the devil and he will flee from you. So draw close to the Lord, because He wants to draw close to you. Don’t listen to the enemy about your past, the blood was shed so you don’t have to worry about that any more. Choose today to draw closer to the Lord.

369 Why? Through all of our goodness, and all of our goodness, and all of our goodness, we’re still carnal. But once in the Presence of God, recognizing that we could never stand there, only through the merits of Jesus Christ, then we draw nigh unto God, through the merits of His Son. “Lord, I come to You, with an innocent heart. In the Name of Thy Son Jesus, please receive me.” Oh, brother, you’re coming by a living way then.
