Psalm 34:18,

“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

At the time when David wrote this Psalm, things had taken a turn for the worst in his life. He was being chased by his best friend's father, he was being pursued by King Achish of Gath, and he was alone away from home. David had no one to comfort him or give him counsel. David had reached a rough place in his life.

Reaching out to God for strength, David penned this Psalm when he was depressed and brokenhearted. He wrote, “I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1). “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” (34:6). “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.” (34:19). The future King of Israel and a great warrior finds himself writing about the poverty of spirit and the afflictions that plague him in such a desperate way.

You may find yourself in a similar place of desolation and brokenheartedness; if not, you most likely know someone who is. The Scripture is either true or it isn’t. He knows the specific situation you are going through. He knows exactly what He wants to draw from you and build in you through the experience. Remember that He will never leave you during the time of trial. He is always near.

David recognized the source of his strength was not in his human ability, but in the supernatural power of God. Be willing to accept the bad as well as the good from Him who works all things for our good. Trust in the fact that God redeems the souls of those who serve and trust in Him.

Trials and tribulations will come that may crush your spirit, make you ashamed, or leave you brokenhearted. So remember when the valley comes, “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Bless the Lord at all times and sing His praise continually, and magnify the Lord. He will come to you.

I’m so glad to know that He can be found amongst the brokenhearted. And in our sorrows He’s not one that would leave us. He stands by us when all has failed, and the last hopes of earthly reaching has come to its end, He is still God and He loves us. He was the expressing of God.
